A Fall Wedding in New England

12 Jan

written by Janet Lee Harrold

Over the course of the 13 or 14 years that I have been  working here at Cedar Grove Gardens, I have had many of opportunities to view, design, set up, break down  and post about the hundreds, no  actually  thousands of beautiful wedding flowers that we create for newly married couples on a weekly basis. It’s not everyday that I get the opportunity to be invited and actually see the fruits of our labor throughout the entire day and blog about it on  a personal level. This past fall I was able to attend as a guest- the beautiful bride Arianne is the daughter of one of Cedar Grove Gardens finest. Growing up as a teenager, Arianne also worked here at the shop for a couple of years to earn a bit of spending money so we like to think we watched her grow up. Needless to say I was honored to be invited.

On a typical day Arianne is a beautiful young woman inside and out, but on her wedding day-she was absolutely stunning. Her dress was breathtaking designed by Rosa Clara with lace and  seeded pearls. The beauty that no one could see was the thoughtful sentiment that her mother had sewn in for her, it was to be her something blue.  A remnant of her junior high school uniform where she  met her first crush and now love of her life Mike. The blue plaid swatch  with I love you embroidered in red also held her grandfathers wedding band close to her heart even if just for that afternoon.

Her bouquet was one of my personal favorites.

The Landscape outside of The Red Lion Inn was bursting with rich autumnal hues. Arianne and Mike’s first look photos were taken beneath a gorgeous red Japanese Maple surrounded by a warm golden and neutral backdrop that complimented the colors of the bridesmaids dresses and garnet colored calla lily’s, antique hydrangea , seeded eucalyptus, sweet pea and dusty miller that made up their lovely bouquets.

The Ceremony was to take place at the end of the enchanted  staircase, lined with candle lit antiqued  lanterns and flanked with floral accents that included O’hara garden roses, sprigs of lisianthus  and green moss. The ambiance in the room was incredible. Below the staircase they stood underneath the amazing  crystal chandelier where they recited their wedding vows and brought the entire room to tears. After the ceremony the guests were directed to the upstairs loft to enjoy the cocktail reception while the downstairs was transformed into a stunning ballroom like atmosphere for an evening of dinner and dancing. The table arrangements were quite fitting as garden roses, lisianthus calla lilies. sweet pea and textural greens encompassed a  candle lit lantern, the fragrance of the flowers permeated the room and the guests were anxiously awaiting to see who the lucky person was that would get to take home the centerpiece.

The evening was certainly one to be remembered, but could not have been possible without the hard work of all the qualified vendors.

For starters. the beautiful images that you see above and so many more where taken by the fabulous Ali Rosa Photography, this was not our first experience with Ali, she also did the photos for another one of our co- workers weddings…we love how amazing, thoughtful and in- tune she was to everything important that day.

The Cake was from Montilio’s Baking Co.

Recipe for the perfect Thanksgiving

A recipe for the perfect Thanksgiving by Janet Lee Harrold

Checklist:

1 fresh turkey… check

cranberry jelly…check

1 pecan pie…check

stuffing…hold the stuffing,  looks like you may have forgotten the most important ingredient of all…FLOWERS!!

At Cedar Grove Gardens we are thankful for you, our loyal customers, we never forget that you are the reason that we are here to serve.  So we have compiled a few last minute Thanksgiving Day tips to ensure that your holiday table is dressed in style with more than just the Thanksgiving turkey.

1.Look to nature for easy, elegant ways to embellish your Thanksgiving table.  Nuts, gourds, fall leaves, and sticks gathered from outside are a simple way to add texture to your table while bringing the bountiful outdoor abundance indoors.

2. Don’t forget the flowers…A simple way to give your holiday decorations a professionally decorated look is to stick to just two or three colors. Deciding on a palette before you shop makes the selection process quick and easy. You may want to take advantage of the season and add fresh fruits to your floral centerpiece. If you are thinking you would rather keep it simple just add a single rose or mokara orchid tucked into the napkin at each place setting to welcome your guest to the table. A few floating or votive candles will be just the right touch for a reflective element . My personal favorite is to align  3 simple vases of monochromatic flowers  in the center of your table and when it is time to replace the flowers with the delicious turkey, simply disburse them in different rooms throughout the house or send them home with your guests.

thanksgiving-trio-slider

3. Don’t forget to add a wreath to your door or entry way, nothing says welcome friends like  a beautiful wreath that can last through the entire holiday season. We know that our customers enjoy our luscious custom made wreaths and bows. You have been asking for a couple of weeks and we are now set up and ready to greet you with a new selection and extensive line of ribbons! Enjoy your Thanksgiving and thank you for making Cedar Grove Gardens a welcome addition to your holiday traditions.

Saphire Estate Brad Smith Photography

31 Oct

We had the honor of providing flowers for Ashley and Joey’s wedding…I just love the softness of her bouquet, pale pink, white and peach  roses collared with a soft collar of dusty miller captures the essence of her gown perfectly.    unnamed  The expressions on the bridesmaids faces say it all! If it’s an indicator of the remainder of the day i’m sure this wedding was lots of fun.

Beyond the Paint Lower Mills

30 Aug

Beyond the paint is an art exhibit created by our very own in house artist Janet Lee Harrold.   If you look deep into each painting you may notice an obscure message hidden somewhere in the painting, each painting tells a story that is unique to the establishment it depicts. An example would be that of the image that you see here on The Ashmont Grill painting discretely placed at the bottom, it pays homage to a reference that was mentioned in  the movie “the drop”  based in Brooklyn, the character Nadia (Noomi Rapace) says she works as a waitress at the Ashmont Grill. The exhibit is now on display until November 7th at ester lower dot dining stop in for a  lunch or dinner and enjoy the patio and the art at this trendy spot offering diverse, modern comfort fare sourced from a rooftop garden.  You won’t be disappointed.

The exhibit also includes a variety of  paintings  from local eateries in the charming neighborhoods of Dorchester and Milton, take a stroll down Dorchester Ave…

Summer Wedding Bliss

26 Aug

Love was definitely in the air this summer and we are always happy to do our small part to help embellish the special day. Listening to our brides vision and pulling it all together takes a lot of hard work  and preparation on so many. We are always excited to see the day unfold. The fabulous Dan Aguirre Photography did a superb job in documenting the day with photos, we are pleased that he has decided to share them with us.

Just love the Boston Scenes featured here…

Dorchester Parks 125th Year Anniversary Gala Celebration

01 Aug

The direct link to purchase tickets for the September 9th address at Dorchester Park. fb cover

This year, our beloved Dorchester Park marks its 125th anniversary and to celebrate, the Dorchester park Association is planning a gala cocktail party event in the park, with music, dancing, and small plates on Friday September 9th, 2016.  We will be hosting our usual events: a Family Fun Day and Auto Show on Sunday, September 11.
We have had similar events in years past but our goal this year is to welcome and introduce as many Dorchester residents to the wonders of the Park with a more casual event at a lower price point, while raising enough funds to continue our important work of retaining and revitalizing Dorchester Park for our community. Our goals are to re-introduce water sources in two locations brought in by our volunteers to maintain them during the critical period of establishing root systems. We are also continually working in partnership with the Parks Department to assess the health of mature trees in the Park and plan for new plantings to replace dead or dying trees. The endowment allows us to purchase and plant new trees to keep the natural forestscape.
Dorchester Park, an Olmstead designed park, has been added to the National Register of Historic Places and the Association has set its overall goal to leave  Dorchester  Park with the same foot print and design for the citizens of Dorchester in the year 2091, the two hundredth birthday of Dorchester Park.
Help us reach this goal on the Park’s 125th anniversary of the founding of the park, by contributing to the fund to maintain and improve the urban forest within the park.  This will support the weekend events including the Gala, Car Show and Family Fun Day. We hope you can help by being a sponsor of this event and we look forward to collaborating with you for this worthy cause. The sponsorship levels are listed below.

60 State St. A Room with a spectacular view!

22 Jul

by Janet Lee Harrold

What better atmosphere is there in the heart of Boston than 60 State St? To be able to look  through the panoramic windows and see both the harbor and the city it’s just breathtaking! We were honored to be a part of such a loving celebration as Elizabeth and Ryan tied the knot at the beautiful St. Cecelia’s Church recently. Enjoy the photos below courtesy of  the fabulous Person + Killian Photography.

Did you know that the painting in the center reredos is a reproduction of da Vinci’s The Last Supper, and the dome above is an array of 24K gold rosettes?

Little acts of kindness right in your own backyard

14 Jul

by Janet Lee Harrold

This time of year your backyard is probably bursting with blooms that are unknowingly treasures that can be gathered together and made into a bouquet that can be gifted to someone who may be in  need of a smile or an unexpected gift of thanks. Perhaps you  may want to drop it off to a nursing home and ask the front desk  to pass it along to someone who doesn’t have any family members or hasn’t had any visitors lately. Your act of kindness is sure to make their day. If you are a bit nervous about  arranging the flowers-don’t be, I’m sure the lucky recipient won’t mind one bit, but just in case, here are a few simple tips. Take the time to add seasonal and whimsicle blooms to any waterproof container. Maybe you have a vintage vessel laying around the house, or a recycled glass vase. (I’ve even used an empty pickle or pepper jar)  Remember to embrace nature by using splashes of texture and color from your garden. Using blooms that  are fragrant are always a welcomed treat.

garden-948559_960_720pix

still-life-836760_960_720fr

On a side note don’t forget to be kind to yourself, another pleasant surprise in the garden just may be the fresh basil that you planted to make Grandma Angelina’s  famous tomatoe sauce recipe, alternatively, think  about how  a fresh sprig of herbs can totally transform your next cocktail.  If the thought of a Blueberry Thai Basil Mojito appeals to you, then you will want to try the following recipe:

Blueberry Thai Basil (Serves 1)

  • 1 Tbsp. Fresh Thai Basil Leaves
  • 1 Tbsp. Agave
  • 2 oz. Light Rum
  • ¼ C. Fresh Blueberries
  • 2 tsp. Lime Juice
  • 6 oz. Sparkling Water
  • Ice
  • Optional: Extra Basil for Garnish
    1. Place the basil leaves, agave, rum and blueberries into a highball glass and muddle until there are no whole blueberries left.
    2. Add the lime juice and sparkling water into the glass, stir then add the ice. Serve.
