New York, New York! PDF Print E-mail
Written by Lisa

Hello All!

Richard and I returned from the New York International Gift Show last week and we both had a great time. no, really! it's usually pretty daunting but this time I was really energized.  There was lots of new product and as usual great display and merchandising ideas to be had. It's always inspiring to see what the creative mind  comes up with. My fave was the light fixture made out of an exhaust fan . You know the pipes you see on rooftops with metal turban like tops spinning around......well someone took those turban tops and flipped them upside down and put a bulb in them.................genius!!!!!!!

We also visited a fabulous new public green space in the meat packing district called The Highline. The High Line is an old elevated rail bed that has been hardscaped and planted with trees and perrennials (as well as some gorgeous "side of road' type weeds), it's very lushly planted but not "manicured". It still has a very modern industrial feel. Its a silk purse from a sows ear to be sure! Incredible. To walk through the city at that height, behind and between buildings is a very cool perspective. Covered loading/unloading areas have been utilized as spaces to gather for outdoor yoga classes and the like. There is a very innovative stadium seating area that is totally handicapped accessible through an ingeniously simple ramp system. Phase two and three are being worked on as we speak. The High Line is a MUST SEE if your in the city. go to www.thehighline.org for great photos.

So lets go over what we bought and whats coming in........Most product starts arriving Sept. into Oct.....all of it will be in by November 1st and we'll have a sampling of Christmas out by then too.

Lots of new card lines and books....you all know how I love the books. Home decor , style books, books on art and different cultures....anything that is a visual treat..... I even spoke to Richard about possibly going to the stationery/book show next year...We have such a following for cards and books. I  broke my own rule and ordered some boxed Holiday cards. People always ask for them so look for them here in October.

In the home accessory dept. we bought a great selection of small decorative things perfect for gifting. Elephants keep coming to mind...lots of animal chachkas....a new line of elegant and affordable porcelain vases, some small some big......a great selection of new Buddah figures, small enamel boxes in animal figures, an assortment of bookends (great guy gift...). We got some great scarves. Chennille and silk....sumptuous fabrics that feel and look so good, An awesome new line of fragranced candles from Voluspa....very sexy in their black glass tumblers. A beautiful hostess gift.....

Speaking of hostesses....the fancy rubber gloves will be back in leopard and lace patterns, new Stonewall Kitchen gift samplers, luscious handmade caramels from Hammonds Candies, some new cookbooks, Jasper Whites 50 Chowders (not new but sooooo good), and bamboo cutting boards, cocktail napkins and so much more.

For kids we have a hysterical new line of plush toys (organic of course....) based on kids artwork. So great. Lots of new art sets from the great kids company EE Boo, new books from Barefoot books in Cambridge, musical toys, pick-up sticks, marbles, bicycle bells, and all that good stuff.

As a rule I don't generally carry jewelery but  couldn't resist the fair trade beads made from paper (yes paper) in Rwanda by a women's co-operative or the terrific hand carved wooden hoop earrings from Bali in Indonesia. Beautiful organic inspired shapes ...art to wear.

Shall I go on? I could ...there's so much more I haven't mentioned. When  the product starts rolling in its like Christmas. So do plan on coming by regularly to see what has come in. You wont want to miss any of it!

Farmer's Market
 Ashmont/Peabody Square Farmer's Market

operates every Friday from 2:00pm until 7:00pm, Join us.  This market began last year and has now moved to it's permanent location at the new Ashmont Station. There are three great farms offering fresh picked produce and of course there is Cedar Grove Gardens offering a great selection of LOCALLY grown plants and cut flowers from some of Massachusetts most productive floral farms.

We offer lots of locally grown stems for $2.00 or 3/$5.00. Mix and match or pick up one of our own wildflower bouquets for just $5.00 or $10.00.

Some of these wildflowers grow outside our doors in the sale yard or along the fence or in the island we take care of across the street. Can't get more local than that!!!!!

Hope to see you there!!!!

Let It Rain!!! PDF Print E-mail
Written by Richard

Let It Rain!!!!  I mean that. Have you driven around and looked at the growth along the sides of the road?  I walk my dog regularly thru Dorchester Park and I have been well aware of how stressed everything is. The acorns are falling off the Oaks prematurely, the leaves are fading, and even the Japanese Knotweed is dying!! That is one tough weed as any of you who are gardeners know, and to see that dying back spells trouble to water- tables and the like.

At the Bradley Estate in Canton  the Lily of the Valley was nearly wiped out, as were numerous shallow rooted species of Rhododendrons and other plants. So let it rain, let it rain, let it rain. And who could have picked a better day for it than Monday!!!! The outlook for this weekend is great, so be thankful.

We are gearing up for the final four months for 2010. I'm involved in two large events. One is the Barn Gala at the Dorchester Historical Society. We recently worked with Collins Landscape and Design, my nephew's company, to clean up DHS headquarters in anticipation of the event. We enlarged a parking area which will be tented, removed an older fence so that a new fence that replicates the antique fence extends the outside perimeter of the property.  We helped to locate a millworks in Watertown to duplicate the acorn post and are awaiting their installation now. It's a great organization that could really use your support. Visit www.dorchesterhistoricalsociety.org and read about every thing that's happening at the historical society.

We are also working with the Dorchester Park Association on their next fundraiser. I schedule their cleanups and help them to raise funds. Visit their website at www.dotpark.org and read about all that is happening there. They have a new website and are running a photocontest that has an Ipod as a prize!!! Check it out.

In the meantime enjoy the rain and recognize how beneficial it is.

What's Happening at Cedar Grove Gardens???

Funny you should ask. There are many things happening at Cedar Grove Gardens!!

First we'll be putting together a panel of judges to evaluate the top five vote getters in our recent Garden Design Contest. We had some great entries and they all deserve credit for putting together some of the finest gardens around. They executed their designs in a thoughtful manner and showed their stuff. A big congratulations to them all and a larger thank you for sharing your wonderful photos. We'll be in touch with all of you. We hope to announce the winner  on or about September 15th.

We have a panel of judges that include Carol Stocker previously Garden writer for the Boston Globe, Pat Desmond, Editor of the Milton Times, Maureen Forry from the Dorchester Reporter, Kristin Ahern, photographer and we are waiting on one other. They'll be deciding the winner from the top five vote recipients.

We have a wedding show event on September 10, 11 and 12. We are sponsors of a Dorchester Park Cleanup on the 11th of September. We are also a major sponsor of the Save Our Barn Gala on September 24th along with numerous other local businesses and individuals. Our Scarecrow event is about to start and we'll be hosting another wedding show on the 29th, 30th and 31st of October.

The 31st is Halloween of course and we'll be hosting our annual festival with hayrides, balloons and refreshments!! It's a great family event. Watch for more details and friend us on Facebook to keep up to date. Our Evening of Inspiration Event will be held on November 3rd and 4th. This was a huge success last year and a delightful way to spend an evening. Plus you just might learn something!!!

New product is scheduled for delivery thru out the coming months so check back regularly.

Off We GO..... PDF Print E-mail
Written by Richard

Off we go to the wild big apple!!! Wish it were blue yonder......

Lisa and I are leaving in the morning for our annual treck to the New York Gift Show. We'll be searching for new gift product to round out our selections during the next few months. This show is quite large and gives us an opportunity to find vendors and suppliers that we may have missed in Atlanta last January.

We do a large part of our Fall and Christmas buying at the Atlanta show in January. Unbelievable, isn't it? We shop in January for product to offer the following November and December. It makes sense really. The past season's sales are current in our memory and we have a good idea what sold and what didn't and that helps us pick materials wisely. We use the New York show mainly to supplement those earlier decisions and to look for gift product as opposed to decorative product.  The merchandise we select begins to appear in our displays within a few weeks.

Meanwhile back at the farm the yard crew will be continueing to do the great job they have done this year on keeping everything looking healthy and  great. They'll also be making selections from availability list sent weekly from LOCAL growers. Along with Mums and Kale, two seasonal favoites, we have a great selection of fresh Proven Winners in select Fall colors, Sedums, Heuchera and Swiss Chard !!  Combining these plants helps to freshen up gardens and containers planted earlier.

The inside crew continues to work on the three weddings this weekend and get prepared for next weeks weddings. As always they are here to take care of any and every fresh flower need you have in the mean time.

That's the latest update from me....Enjoy this comfortable change in weather patterns while you can. And be sure to stop by for a peek at the new arrivals that continue to appear at Cedar Grove Gardens!!!
