Finally!!! spring!! its here!!!.....lets get GROWING!! PDF Print E-mail
Written by Lisa

ahhhhh.....65 degrees and sunny.......and all of a sudden i feel like doing some yard work!  Time to trim those shrubs I forgot about last year. And plant those perennials I just dug out of the cold frame.

(mental note to self....don't buy more than you have energy to plant this year!)  As I walk around the yard I make a note of the things that went in last year and how glad I am that I did it last year and they are now on their way... small tet-a-tet daffodils are my favorite...I save the plants that have bloomed at the shop and gone by and let the foliage ripen over the summer. Mid-summer I then strip the foliage knock the dirt off and leave the bulbs in the garage to dry and be planted in the fall. They look great here and there in back near the woods, very natural, and none of the little critters like to munch on them the way they do with crocus and the like....well worth the effort!

I really want to plant some viburnum this year and also some blueberry bushes. Not for the eating so much as to attract some new birds to the yard. My life would be complete if I could just attract a pair of nesting Orioles. They seem to fly through the yard and wave at me on their way over to the Arboretum.....where I know they are feasting on all kinds of fruiting trees and shrubs.......mental note!!! plant it now!!!

I finally have an owl in my owl nesting box! I came home from work on March 7th and there she was....sunning her face at dusk..it's a miracle!!!.. It has been a squirrel condo for a year and I was very disappointed.... but I found out that owls never make their own nests and always just horn in and take over someone else's home ..so I guess it was just a matter of time. The female is sitting on her eggs and I can't wait to see some babies mid-summer.

I have pulled all the pottery out of the garage and set them all in their spots for the season. Some are already planted up with perennials (hosta, lilies, lily turf, ferns...) ready to sprout back up and brighten a tough corner. Some are empty and awaiting their summer plantings. I think this year i will leave the plaid blankets on the chairs on the side porch and go with a woodland summer camp look ....this means plantings of ferns and hostas, natural and woodsy. Maybe my tropical phase has run its course.... it was never really right here in New England now that I think about it....I'll have to trade those tiki torches in for some vintage Coleman camping lanterns.....mmmmm...I feel an Ebay spree coming on..............

Any way....the time to plan for summer  is NOW!!! and we will be running some informational seminars this spring so stay tuned for more info. There will be a variety of topics covered so there should be something for everyone. Veggies, flowers, etc..............  Get ready to get growing!!!!!!
